Hotel Onoma, Daejeon, Autograph Collection offers a total of 9 room types. These are broadly categorized into the smallest Business Deluxe rooms at 26 ㎡ (approx. 280 sqft), Deluxe rooms at 36~37 ㎡ (approx. 387~398 sqft), and Premier and Suite rooms at around 50 ㎡ (approx. 538 sqft). Accessible room types for guests with disabilities are available for Business Deluxe and Deluxe rooms. Among the Premier rooms, those with a single bed are corner rooms offering views in two directions. Guest rooms are located between the 26th and 37th floors. Since there are no other high-rise buildings in the immediate vicinity, every room boasts an unobstructed panoramic view. Consequently, the hotel does not charge extra for higher floors or window directions within the same room tier. If you check in early and request a preferred direction or floor, you will likely get the room you want depending on availability. (Excluding the north-facing rooms, the views from east, west, and south-facing rooms come down to personal preference.) The room type bookable with points or free night awards is the Business Deluxe room, and point upgrades at the time of booking are not allowed.

This stay was a paid stay booked on the official Marriott website, and I booked the most basic room, a Business Deluxe 1 King room. (Upon check-in, I received a complimentary upgrade to a Premier Corner Room as a Platinum Elite benefit.)

Hotel Onoma Daejeon, Autograph Collection opened in 2021 and became the first hotel in the Daejeon and Chungcheong region to earn a 5-star rating in 2022. However, perhaps due to its location or regional characteristics, it is priced lower than 5-star hotels in other major metropolitan areas. The hotel’s most basic room type, Business Deluxe rooms are priced in the low 200,000 KRW (approx. $144 USD) range on weekdays, and in the low-to-mid 200,000 KRW (approx. $144 to $181 USD) range even on weekends, meaning there is little price difference between weekdays and weekends. During peak seasons like public holidays, you can secure rooms starting from the mid-200,000 KRW (approx. $181 USD) range if you book 3 to 4 months in advance. However, depending on booking timing and demand, the rate can spike up to the high 400,000 KRW (approx. $362 USD) range (all based on Business Deluxe rooms). In the screenshot above, you can see that for dates like September 28, 29, and 30, room rates start in the 230,000 KRW (approx. $166 USD) range even during the holiday season, even when booking three months in advance.

Hotel Onoma Daejeon, Autograph Collection is also a great place to redeem the annual free night award from Marriott co-branded credit cards. As shown in the screenshot above, Saturday stays can climb to the mid-40,000-point range, but weekdays and some weekends offer a reward night rate in the low-to-mid 30,000-point range, which is perfect for using a 35k-point free night award. Another advantage is that you can book using a free night award topped up with points, as rates rarely exceed the 50,000-point limit (which is the maximum top-up limit). While there may be mixed opinions about using a 35k-point award for a hotel that costs in the mid-200,000 KRW range, it is a decent option since there are few alternatives in Daejeon. In Korea, credit cards that offer a 35k-point free night award include the Marriott Bonvoy The Best Shinhan Card in South Korea, and in the United States, cards like the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card are available.

I stayed at Hotel Onoma, Autograph Collection on a paid stay without using points or free night awards. For a weekday stay in mid-April, I paid 226,380 KRW (approx. $164 USD) per night, including taxes and service charges.

Hotel Onoma Daejeon, Autograph Collection is a Marriott-affiliated property, participating in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. Autograph Collection, which Hotel Onoma belongs to, is a premium brand similar to Marriott, Westin, and Sheraton. Rather than offering a standardized design and guest experience, it is a boutique-oriented brand where each hotel features its own unique interior and guest experience. The Marriott Bonvoy program has six membership tiers, with benefits increasing for higher tiers. Tiers are generally divided into those below Platinum and those at Platinum and above, as the most tangible and significant benefits begin at the Platinum Elite level. At the time of my stay, I was a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member. Platinum Elite status can be achieved by staying 50 nights or more per year at Marriott brand hotels, or through credit card perks.

Key benefits for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members include early check-in (subject to availability), guaranteed 4:00 PM late check-out (except at resorts and convention hotels), complimentary lounge access (or free breakfast at hotels without a lounge), a welcome gift, and free room upgrades including suites (subject to availability). Gold status, one tier below Platinum Elite, offers significantly fewer perks—late check-out is not guaranteed and capped at 2:00 PM, suite upgrades are excluded, and complimentary breakfast or lounge access is not provided, representing a major gap in benefits. Marriott Bonvoy Elite member benefits apply to both paid stays and Reward Nights.

Hotel Onoma Daejeon, Autograph Collection is located on the site of the former Expo Science Park, which hosted the 1993 Daejeon Expo. Situated next to the Daedeok Research Complex, the hotel is quite far from Daejeon’s major railway stations: Daejeon Station, Seodaejeon Station, and Sintanjin Station. Instead, express and intercity bus stops like Yuseong Terminal, Dunsan Stop, and Doryong Stop are close by, making buses more convenient than trains for public transport. Additionally, Daejeon Subway Line 1 does not pass through the former Expo Science Park, so you must use city buses rather than the subway. Taking a taxi from Yuseong Express Bus Terminal or Yuseong Intercity Bus Terminal to the hotel takes about 15 minutes, while a taxi from Daejeon Station takes about 20+ minutes, with estimated fares of 6,500 KRW (approx. $5 USD) and 9,000 KRW (approx. $7 USD) respectively. If driving, the nearest highway exit is Yuseong IC, which is about 15 minutes away from the hotel.

The hotel check-in counter is located on the 7th floor. If you are heading to the hotel after parking on basement level 2 (B2) or 3 (B3), you must use the hotel-dedicated elevator in the hotel zone. When accessing from the 1st floor, make sure to use the hotel-dedicated elevator located toward the Gapcheon River direction. Especially when moving from the 1st floor, these dedicated elevators are physically separated from other commercial elevators; if you have trouble finding them, it is best to ask the hotel staff at the 1st-floor information desk. Please note that only one out of the four elevators connects directly from the underground parking lot to the guest rooms, while the remaining ones only run up to the 7th-floor check-in counter.

The 7th-floor lobby is relatively small, with only two check-in counters and one concierge desk. Hotel Onoma has 171 rooms, but the number of check-in counters feels insufficient for its size. Especially due to the nature of hotels where check-ins cluster at specific times, the lines are expected to be quite long during peak hours. In fact, many guest reviews mention long waits at check-in. Fortunately, there was no line when I arrived at 4:00 PM on a weekday. I was the only one checking in, and only about two other groups arrived shortly after. The check-in process was smooth and efficient. Since the hotel has been open for about two years now, the staff were highly experienced and well-aware of elite member benefits.

The Premier Corner Room I stayed in was located on the 36th floor, the highest floor. Situated on the southeastern corner of the tower building, the room enjoyed excellent sunlight from morning to evening. Despite the bright sun, the blackout curtains were highly effective, preventing me from waking up early due to sunlight unless I opened them. Even on a high floor, there was no wind noise or other disturbing sounds, and the soundproofing between rooms was excellent, ensuring a comfortable stay. From the southeast corner room, the view to the east showed the Expo Science Park, Expo Bridge, Smart City, and Gyejoksan Mountain. To the south, it overlooked the Hanbat Arboretum and Daejeon Arts Center, as well as City Hall and the Dunsan-dong area. Since mountains are closer to the north, rooms facing east, west, or south likely offer better views.

As expected of a hotel that opened in 2021, both the room and the bedding were kept in pristine condition. The Premier Corner Room features a massive pillar on one side of the room, but since the room is spacious at around 50 ㎡ (approx. 538 sqft), it wasn’t overly bothersome. Right in front of the entrance is a wardrobe and a luggage rack. Opposite the wardrobe, the bathroom and the minibar are located. Walking past the short entrance hallway, you will find a king-size bed on the right and a sofa on the left that looks large enough to comfortably seat two, or up to three people.

There was a table next to this sofa, which seemed to be placed at the end of the sofa to avoid blocking the pathway. The room generally had a clean and modern feel, with light-toned walls and ceilings harmonizing with the dark-toned table and shelves. In front of the bed, an orange stool added a pop of color to the decor. Across from it was a long built-in desk covering one side of the wall, with a TV positioned in the corner. As expected from a recently built hotel, the TV supports wireless screen mirroring from smartphones.

The bathroom features separate areas for the bathtub, shower booth, and toilet. Although not large, the layout is highly efficient, and the dark stone finish—contrasting with the room—gives it a calm feel. While there was only one sink, it was spacious enough to accommodate toiletries for multiple guests. However, due to a minor design flaw in the shower door, water running down the door dripped outside the booth onto the sink area, which was a bit disappointing.

Bathroom amenities at Hotel Onoma feature full-size bottles from Grown Alchemist, an Australian brand known for using organic ingredients and being non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free. Wooden toothbrushes, toothpaste, a comb, a shower cap, and cotton pads are also provided.

The minibar at Hotel Onoma is stocked with two bottles of water, two bottles of sparkling water, two cans of Coca-Cola, and two cans of Sprite, and it is complimentary once per stay. This means it will not be restocked during your stay. However, additional bottled water was provided upon request. This is a positive change compared to when the hotel first opened and offered No Brand (E-mart’s private brand) cola and lemon-lime soda, which drew some complaints. Eight Nespresso capsules (four capsules each for two different varieties) are also provided.

Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM at Townhouse, located on the 7th floor (the check-in lobby level). The price is 38,000 KRW (approx. $28 USD) per adult. Being on a lower floor compared to the guest rooms, it offers a more intimate view of the Gapcheon River right in front of the building. The high ceiling, likely spanning two floors, gave the elongated dining hall a surprisingly spacious atmosphere. Although the selection wasn’t vast, each menu item was of good quality and highly satisfying. I particularly appreciated having options like soft tofu (sundubu), which is rare for a hotel breakfast buffet. The bakery selection was nicely curated, and four to five types of fruit were offered. At the live noodle bar, you could enjoy custom-made Vietnamese pho, and the egg station prepared eggs to order. The Korean section featured soup, salted pollock roe (myeongran-jeot), and seasoned vegetables, making it suitable for older family members, alongside standard options like ham and smoked salmon.

The official Marriott website offers packages that include breakfast. However, for those who do not use the Marriott Bonvoy program and are booking a one-time stay, third-party online booking platforms like Yanolja or Booking.com might offer cheaper rates.

Hotel Onoma, Autograph Collection is connected directly to the adjacent Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science department store, allowing guests to access the mall from the 7th-floor check-in lobby. As one of the largest department stores in Korea (ranking 5th nationwide), it houses a movie theater and an aquarium, making it a great place to spend time. The view of the hotel tower from the Sky Garden on the department store rooftop in the evening was also beautiful. Across the street from Shinsegae is the National Science Museum, surrounded by other museums like the Geological Museum and the Currency Museum. Crossing the river, you’ll find the Hanbat Arboretum, Daejeon Museum of Art, and Daejeon Arts Center, offering plenty of nearby activities and sights. A 10-minute walk east from the hotel leads to the Daejeon Convention Center, which houses a Sungsimdang DCC branch.

The hotel features a fitness center and a swimming pool. At the fitness center, the on-site staff was very friendly and guided me through various exercises using Technogym equipment. Although I couldn’t access the pool due to regular maintenance, swimming while overlooking the Gapcheon River in the evening seemed like it would offer a great ambiance. The pool has one lane for swimming and another for leisure play; though not spacious, it was long enough for proper swimming, and a hot tub was available on one side. The number of sunbeds was relatively small, around five or six.

Perhaps because it has been open for two years, the staff generally seemed experienced, but their response to unexpected situations was somewhat disappointing. I had an emergency in the middle of the night that required a trip to the ER, and I had to stop by the lobby to register my car for parking. While I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary, it was disappointing that the staff just stared at me in pain without offering help or saying anything. Other than that, the staff were generally friendly and polite, and there were no major inconveniences.

Rather than having an independent parking lot, the hotel shares parking space with the Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science department store. Because of this, the hotel does not offer in-and-out privileges with a single registration; you must contact the front desk to register the car every single time you re-enter to receive free parking. While allowing free parking for up to two cars per room is a plus, guests who plan to drive in and out frequently must keep this in mind to avoid unexpected parking charges.

Compared to hotels in Seoul, it offers a relatively affordable option. Since there are few alternatives of this tier in Daejeon, it is highly recommended if you are visiting the city. Above all, the outstanding view from every room is its greatest strength. Other perks include the ability to use the annual 35k-point free night award from the Marriott Bonvoy The Best Shinhan Card, and finding rooms in the 200,000 KRW range even during the summer peak season. However, check-in can be delayed during peak hours due to the limited number of check-in counters, and registering your car license plate at the front desk for every exit is a minor hassle. Additionally, the breakfast buffet has a somewhat limited selection for a 5-star hotel, which could be a hit or miss.

Recommended for those who want to stay at a 5-star hotel in Daejeon, those looking to redeem a Marriott 35,000-point free night award without extra points, and anyone planning a staycation in Daejeon.
