However, the elite benefits of Shilla Rewards are far more meaningful when staying at Shilla Hotel’s higher-tier brands, such as The Shilla Seoul or The Shilla Jeju, rather than Shilla Stay. For example, Gold members receive some room upgrades and dining discounts, while Diamond members enjoy higher points accumulation and broader benefits, but key privileges like room upgrades, lounge access, and laundry services are mostly tied to specific booking conditions or hotel occupancy. Additionally, most benefits are structured to be better utilized at The Shilla Seoul or The Shilla Jeju than Shilla Stay. In particular, the Silver tier offers virtually no noticeable benefits despite being easy to achieve. Silver status requires only one night per year, but the room points accumulation rate remains the same as the entry-level Brown tier at 3%, and the dining rate is also identical at 1%. Although a 10,000-point voucher for room bookings is provided, this benefit is also restricted to The Shilla brand, making it largely irrelevant for guests who primarily stay at Shilla Stay.

At the time of my stay at Shilla Stay Seodaemun, I was a Shilla Rewards Silver member. However, as mentioned, the Silver tier offers virtually no tangible benefits, and I received almost no separate privileges during this stay. I could not expect benefits like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, or late check-out, and it was realistic to focus simply on accumulating points as a member.

In conclusion, Shilla Rewards is a meaningful program for travelers who frequently stay at Hotel Shilla properties in Korea. Especially for those staying 10 nights or more per year and utilizing brands like The Shilla Seoul or The Shilla Jeju alongside Shilla Stay, the benefits become noticeable once reaching Gold status or higher. However, for occasional stays at Shilla Stay, maintaining status is not as compelling as with global hotel chains. Nonetheless, the ability to accumulate points based on spending and use them like cash for future stays or dining remains a clear advantage.

True to its name, Shilla Stay Seodaemun is located directly in front of Seodaemun Station on Subway Line 5. The extreme proximity to the station makes it highly convenient for public transit users and those traveling via subway. While Seodaemun is a single-line station on Line 5, it provides direct, transfer-free access to major business and commercial hubs like Gwanghwamun, Jongno, Mapo, and Yeouido. Gwanghwamun and Jongno are close enough to be considered right next door, and Mapo or Yeouido are easily accessible, making it a highly practical location for business travelers visiting Seoul.

Accessibility to major areas in Seoul was generally good. Line 5 connects to many destinations directly, and a single transfer reaches most parts of the city. Even Jamsil, located on the opposite side of Seoul from Shilla Stay Seodaemun, was accessible in under 50 minutes with a single transfer, making it convenient for itineraries that require moving around different parts of the city.

Airport accessibility was also good. For Incheon Airport, taking limousine bus 6002 near the hotel gets you to Terminal 1 without transfers in about 70 minutes. If traveling with heavy luggage, this is much easier than taking the subway with transfers. For Gimpo Airport, Subway Line 5 connects directly in about 50 minutes without transfers, making it a convenient option for domestic flights or routes to Japan and China.

Consequently, the location of Shilla Stay Seodaemun is appealing to both tourists and business travelers visiting Seoul. Its proximity to tourist attractions and business districts in Gwanghwamun and Jongno, good access to Mapo and Yeouido, and relatively convenient airport transit made it a highly satisfying location for itineraries centered around downtown Seoul.

A safe and a mini-fridge were also prepared in the room. The mini-fridge was not pre-stocked, which I personally preferred. It was convenient for storing drinks or light food purchased from the convenience store, and the safe was sufficient for basic valuables.

Overall, the amenities at Shilla Stay Seodaemun were at the exact level expected from a Shilla Stay class business hotel. While not luxurious or abundant, most basic items needed during the stay were prepared, and there was no major inconvenience. There were several convenience stores near the hotel, making it easy to purchase any necessary items, so there were few major disappointments regarding the amenity setup.

There were certainly some disappointing aspects. The fitness center felt close to a token facility, and the parking environment was not convenient even considering it is a downtown hotel. The room also showed some signs of age as expected from a hotel opened in 2015, and issues like water splashing during showers due to the glass partition design, the lack of power outlets, the loose socket near the beds, and the inability to use air conditioning in winter—requiring opening the window to ventilate—were also regrettable.

Nevertheless, Shilla Stay Seodaemun offers a good balance of price, location, and room condition overall. While not a hotel for a luxury staycation, it is highly recommended for travelers seeking a clean, decent room at a reasonable price in downtown Seoul. Especially for those with schedules near Gwanghwamun, Seodaemun, Jongno, Mapo, or Yeouido, the location alone makes it a compelling choice.
